Morgan Silver Dollars
Morgan Silver Dollars are probably the most popular United States coin collected by numistmatists.
More than half a billion Morgan dollars were minted from 1878 through 1904 in Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City.
The Carson City production was generally much lower and ended completely when that branch closed in 1893. Because of their colorful Wild West history, small numbers, and short history, Morgan dollars with the "CC" mintmark are extremely popular.
The 1921 Morgan dollar is probably the most interesting in the series. More than 86 million coins were produced. After 1904, when national silver bullion supplies were almost gone, the government completely suspended the minting of silver dollars. In 1921, after World War One, the government began minting silver dollars again. Morgan dollars were produced in the first part of the year. The new Peace dollar replaced it in late 1921.
In 1918, under the Pittman Act, more than 270 million silver dollars, most of them Morgan dollars, were melted down for bullion. More were melted after the Silver Act of 1942. Still more melting took place in the 1960s and again in the 1970s because of rapidly rising silver prices. This explains why some Morgan dollars that had over a million coins produced are so scarce. It is estimated that only about 17% of Morgan Silver Dollars are still available.
The highest grade Morgan Silver Dollars (MS64 to MS68) are considered investment-grade coins and prices can be very volatile.
